Top Gun Maverick

I do not understand why this movie is nominated as Best Picture. Apart from the it was a mediocre action film and the acting was pretty laughable. I never seen Top Gun so I had no connection or nostalgia towards this movie. If Top Gun Maverick was never nominated I would have not seen this movie.
